What Do I Put Underneath Oak Flooring?

28th Jul 2015

One of the most common questions we are asked here at Peak Oak is "What do I need to put under my oak flooring?". The answer to whether you need underlay, and what underlay to use, very much comes down to a number of different factors.

An underlay can provide added thermal and acoustic value to your room, which makes it a desirable option among many. Whether you require additional thermal and acoustic value is project specific, and looking at whether you would benefit from an underlay.

What type of underlay you can use is dependant on the type of oak flooring chosen and how you intend to fit the oak floor.

As you are probably aware, there are a huge number of underlays and insulations available on the market. At Peak Oak we like to keep our products as natural as possible, which is why we have sheep wool insulation available.

When floating engineered oak flooring, or screwing or nailing down oak flooring, the Sheeps Wool Floor Insulation/Underlay can be used. Consisting of 3mm of sheep's wool which is joined to a paper backing, the underlay will cushion the impact between the oak flooring and the subfloor. This intermediate layer removes the contact between the two hard surfaces, absorbing the vibrations. This underlay is suitable for underfloor heating solutions and includes an integrated moisture protection layer.

If you intend to fit your oak flooring onto joists, we would recommend the Sheeps Wool Insulation Comfort Rolls. These rolls are a range of grey coloured thermal and acoustic insulation rolls, which can be used in both floor and ceiling level applications. The wool simply fits in between your joists offering highly effective insulation, with a superior thermal performance over glass or mineral wool products. The comfort rolls offer unrivalled environmental credentials, as the "greenest" choice of insulation on the market.

The main points to consider when choosing a suitable underlay is to take a look at both the thermal value and the acoustic value that it offers. If you would like to discuss any aspect of underlay with us further, give us a call on 01538 304584.
