Which Oak Door Is Right For Me?

30th Dec 2013 @ 17:41

The feeling of solidity and security from a solid oak door is something no softwood door can ever match. Oak has been used to make doors for generations, and it is something that we are looking to continue with our interior solid oak doors. We currently have four different styles of doors available, so which is right for you?

Four Ledged Doors

Our four ledged oak doors are perfectly suited for the more traditional cottages or rustic barns. These doors have four individual ledges on the back of the door, with a traditional bead detail to one edge of each door board. The doors are similar in grading to our character grade oak flooring, with occasional knots and colour variation.

Yorkshire Ledged Doors

The Yorkshire ledger doors offer a fantastic quality solid oak ledger door for those on a tight budget. Made from the same high quality european oak as our other doors, these doors instead have three individual ledges.

Diamond Doors

If you are looking for something a little bit special from your oak door, our diamond doors offer just that. These doors are similar in style to our four ledged doors but also include a diamond aperture.

Hartington Doors

The Hartington solid oak doors have been designed to contain much of the same character and history as the village from which they are named after. Rather than the boards being flat, these planks instead are given a "wave" like feel. This gives the door a very striking and completely unique character.

Kit Form Or Assembled?

With the choice of door style made, the next step is to decide whether you want to door in a ready assembled form or in kit form. The assembled form means the door is supplied ready to be hung, whereas the kit form doors require you to make them up yourself. The main advantage of the kit form door is of course the cheaper cost to you, as long as you don't mind doing the handy work!

All of the doors are available in the standard widths of 2'3", 2'6" and 2'9" but alternative sizes are available upon request. The Four ledge, Yorkshire and Hartington doors are available in both kit form and assembled form, whereas the Diamond door is available ready assembled only.

If you would like some information on the assembling of our ledged door kits, we have a illustrated guide which can be seen by clicking here.

What Type Of Finish?

To really make your doors look special, you are going to want to apply a finish to them. A finish will not only add colour, if required, but also help to protect them. One of the products we recommend for just this purpose is the Blanchon Hard Waxoil. This oil is available in a number of different styles, including the Smoked Oak (as seen above on the Hartington door).

For those who want to keep their oak door in its original unfinished state, Blanchon also have a product fit for purpose. This product is the Blanchon Original Wood Environment, which is designed to protect the oak, without substantially changing its natural, unfinished colour.
