Choosing The Right Oak Skirting & Architrave For Me

29th Mar 2013 @ 16:13

When looking to finish off your room in style, there is nothing better then Oak Skirting and Architrave. Made from the same high quality European oak as our oak flooring, all of our skirting and architrave is supplied unfinished and in a number of sizes and profiles.

How to choose the right profile for me?

Of course the choice of which profile of oak skirting is right for you will come down to your own personal preference and what you believe to look best in your environment. Currently here at Peak Oak our skirting is available five different profiles; Arabesque, Bullnose, Ogee, Yorkshire and Belgian.

The Arabesque skirting profile evokes a Moorish feeling of the Palace at Granada and the Great Mosque of Istanbul. This ornate skirting is available in widths of 5" and 7".

As by far the most simplest profile of oak skirting we have available, the Bullnose skirting is equally one of the most popular. If you are looking for a solid oak skirting which doesn’t draw attention to itself and offers fantastic value, the Bullnose skirting is for you. One of the great advantages of the simple profile is that it is much less prone to damage that could be caused by vacuum cleaners and general knocks and bumps.

If in your mind you have an image of the traditional skirting board, it is more than likely the Ogee skirting profile. The Ogee profile is the most popular skirting profile we have available, almost certainly because customers are trying to match the existing skirting in their homes.

Taken from the popular traditional design common throughout Yorkshire in 1800s, the Yorkshire skirting is a little more ornate than the standard Ogee profile.

The final skirting we have available is our Belgian solid oak skirting. With a typically understated Flemish design, the Belgian profile falls inbetween the plain look of the Bullnose and the ubiquitous Ogee.

Should my architrave match my skirting?

In short, yes. Although occasionally some may choose to not match, we believe that the room will look best if matched. Therefore if you use the Arabesque oak skirting around your room, you should be looking to use Arabesque architrave around your door.

To really finish of your architrave and to create that high quality, professional feel, we recommend that an architrave block is fitted into place.

Oak Architrave Profiles

How should I finish my oak skirting and architrave?

Like with our oak flooring and our oak doors, we recommend that your skirting and architrave is finished using a hard wax oil such as the Osmo Polyx Oil or Blanchon Hard Waxoil. These oils have been designed to protect and enhance the authentic elegance of all woodwork. With the finishes available in either a Satin or Matt finish, as well as a number of other colours available, you can ensure that your skirting and architrave looks great in your environment.
