Laying Oak Flooring On The Diagonal

22nd Jun 2011 @ 17:43

We're starting to see a lot more oak flooring laid diagonally across a room these days.

Flooring laid diagonally

This example from a french home featured on Freshome, shows how effective diagonal laying of floor boards can be.

If you have a long thin room which you want to appear wider, laying your flooring diagonally will fool the eye by leading it across the room.

Laying boards horizontally across a  narrow room does not achieve the same effect because the eye is constantly "stopped" by the horizontal lines.

N.B. If you are going to buy an oak floor to lay diagonally, do bear in mind you will need to allow for more wastage.
