Caring For Your Oak Flooring

12th Feb 2016

To keep your oak flooring looking as good as it did as the day you first laid the floor, the flooring should be properly cared for and maintained.

Probably the most important factor that can ensure the longevity of your oak flooring is your chosen finish. The finish applied will influence how well protected your oak flooring is. When choosing a finish, you should consider how your finish will look aesthetically, what room it will be used in and is it hard wearing enough for the environment.

With your finish chosen you should look into what the manufacture recommends for the cleaning process. Using the wrong products whilst cleaning certain finishes can cause the finish to be stripped off. For example; after finishing an oak floor with the Blanchon Hard Waxoil - it is recommend that the Blanchon Natural Soap For Oiled Floors is used. The natural soap is designed to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of your oak flooring - whilst providing a deep clean.

Over time your finish may begin to wear and dull. To combat this, many manufacturers have maintenance products available - such as the Blanchon Maintenance Oil.

Any spillages from sauces or liquids should be cleaned up immediately. This will ensure that they do not soak into the timber, causing stains.

Removing dust and dirt from the surface of the oak flooring will help to minimise scratches. This should be done using a soft bristle brush or vacuum cleaner. Dragging furniture along the flooring can also cause marks to appear. A useful addition for your furniture is felt pads, which will minimise the risk of scratches.

For high traffic areas, such as door ways or openings, using a rug can help to protect your floor from becoming excessively worn in a single area.
